Princeville Resort Kauai (soon to be St. Regis)
I think Starwood coincidentally lucked out on its timing to close the Princeville Resort Kauai, which will temporarily suspend operations September through April ‘09 for a heavy duty facelift and modernization. With the recent bankruptcy of Aloha Airlines and the cutbacks from United, the supply of air routes to Hawaii has dive bombed. Airfare has consequently skyrocketed almost overnight, partly contributing to a drop in occupancy across the board in Hawaii.
Hopefully by the time the hardhats get replaced with hula skirts next April, the price of oil will decline (wishful thinking?), and there will be more flight options from the mainland. Regardless, the Princeville Kauai will emerge as yet another St. Regis branded hotel, sure to deliver a more modern, refined luxury. In the meantime though, us common folk can temporarily live lavishly for a weekend with an out of the world special rate of $199 for an OCEANVIEW room. Lord knows this low rate won’t be around once the St. Regis sticker gets slapped on this property.
