Not too long ago in July, Starwood proudly announced the signing of its 100th hotel in Greater China. Less than one month later, Starwood has revised its targets and is planning to erect 200 hotels on mainland China under the Starwood brands by 2011.
Analysts are somewhat skeptical that Starwood will achieve this within just three short years, citing increasing business risks as China’s economy transforms. According to Miguel Ko, Asia Pacific President, Starwood has directed its strategy towards resorts, particularly in southern China. As many as 10 projects will involve Hainan, a tropical island often dubbed as the Hawaii of China. Resorts are also in the works for other seaside areas like Huizhou and Da Mei Sha in Shenzhen.
Mr. Ko also added this interesting statistic – demand from Chinese mainlanders grew so much that theynow comprise 50% of Starwood guests. Starwood did not forecast such quick economic growth in China, and the company is now targeting over 30 projects annually over the next three years.
The Sheraton Sanya Resort was Starwood’s first foray into Hainan, China. The property occupies beachfront real estate in the lush Yalong Bay National Resort District, and has been named the “Official Resort of Miss World” for three consecutive years.
