After an Extreme Wait, the W Scottsdale opens with an Extreme Wow

Finishing touches at the W Scottsdale

UPDATE: CLICK HERE TO SEE FIRST LOOK PHOTOS OF THE W SCOTTSDALE!

Almost a year overdue, the W Scottsdale finally opened its doors to the public. Originally planned to be operational by this year’s Superbowl, the hotel’s developers were burdened by delays stemming from contractors and uniquely crafted hotel objects that took longer than expected to procure.

One such item is a 155,000 pound artistic wall made entirely of stone and glass.  Another is the porte-cochere, which has portholes that measure five feet in diameter and shoot straight into the bottom of the swimming pool, giving those below a glimpse of swimmers above. There’s also a $22,000 piece of Cambodian wood placed inside Sushi Roku, the hyped up restaurant that should be well attended by celebrities and their worshippers.

Here’s some more extreme wowness . . . The public restrooms have an exterior room with shared-sex sinks that force co-mingling. Arizona’s first Bliss Spa has rubber flooring to absorb footsteps so guests are undisturbed as they gaze into clouds depicted all over the spa’s walls. The hotel also has real sand surrounding the perimeter of the pool to replicate a real sandy beach feel, complete with 13 ‘beachside’ cabanas.  Along with a serene waterfall studded by what appears to be floating candles, the W Scottsdale has created quite a mirage in the Arizona desert.

These amenities and features were strategically designed and procured with only one purpose in mind – to create the hottest see-and-be-seen spot in Scottsdale. With 224-rooms and 22-residences, the seven-story W Scottsdale broke ground way back in 2005 and has cost in excess of $100 million to complete. Money was of little object to the developers, and they hope such is true of its clientele as well.  I’d say with a celebrity guest list for opening night and a TV show to be filmed at the hotel in mid-September, they’re right on track.

  3. [...] Since the W Scottsdale went live a couple months back, the hotel has become one of the most bold additions to W Hotels.  With every turn of my head, I found something new begging my curiosity.  Let’s start with the living room, which was seductively lit and speckled with design-heavy chairs and couches arranged to facilitate close conversation.  Each section of seating had its own unique styles and fabrics.   Upon entering the public washrooms, a communal block of sinks broke the divide between the sexes and forced opportunistic co-mingling . . . and that’s just the beginning of the cool factor.
