W Hollywood Hotel & Residences tops itself off in Hollywood fashion

Topping off the W Hollywood

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is a Starwood VIP in LA these days.  After ringing the opening bell of the new luxury SLS Beverly Hills less than a month ago, he made an appearance at the celebratory event marking the completion of the W Hollywood rooftop last Wednesday.  The “topping out” ceremony offered a well-conceived preview of the hotel and residences in appropriate Hollywood fashion.  There were aerial acrobats, abundant camera flashes, and a taste of what’s to come next November.  The W Hollywood Hotel and Residences is expected to launch November 2009, and hopefully it will be spared from delays in today’s economic state.  Let’s keep our fingers crossed!

Here’s what LA Curbed had to say about this milestone event, which even had a special celebrity appearance from Jimmy Kimmel . . .

“During the tour of the roof of the W Hollywood Residences, Stephen Taylor, the general foreman on this project, gave us some details, pointing out the sites of the forthcoming pool, private cabanas, and helicopter pad. Taylor said if there’s something notable about the construction process project, it’s that they are using a much stronger type of concrete called an ‘8000 mix.’ That’s the good stuff, people.  And the 143-unit W Hollywood Residences and the adjacent 305-room W Hollywood Hotel are both expected to be finished by November 2009.”

Not only is the W Hollywood helping make a revival at the famous Hollywood and Vine intersection, the building is also supposed to help out the local community in more ways than one.   The building is registered for LEED certification and aims to reduce auto traffic in the local area by promoting public reliance on using the MTA subway system.  For those who aren’t familiar with LA, Hollywood and Vine is right on the Red Line.  Yes, LA has a subway system although I’m not so sure that the celebrities and VIPs that will be coming through the W Hollywood even know what subway transportation is in LA.

Here are some additional photos from LA Curbed.  Make sure you check out their article for the full scoop and photo set!
