With all the feasting that took place between Thanksgiving and Christmas, we could all drag our butts back to the gym and sweat off some pounds. But as any business traveler knows, that’s a lot easier said than done. In my experience, most of the hotel gyms I’ve come across provide lackluster equipment and kill my motivation to work out. On a recent trip to Austin, I stayed at a hotel where its fitness center was using a storage bench (the kind you find in the bedroom) in place of a workout bench.
Just in time for 2009 resolutions, Sheraton has partnered up with Core Performance, a fitness training and lifestyle brand, to make sure you won’t ever see bedroom furniture in a Sheraton gym. Sheraton Fitness, Programmed by Core Performance, is the name of this new concept and will be rolled out to ALL Sheratons – that’s over 400 hotels around the world.
Core Performance has developed a state-of-the-art gym experience for Sheraton guests with beautifully designed hotel fitness centers and updated equipment from Life Fitness. The training company also recognized that travelers have unique fitness needs when on the road. Their focus is on 20-30 minute efficient training programs such as Jet Lag Buster (for long travel days), Meeting Manager (the conclusion of the business day), and Road Warrior (for the incessant traveler).
The expert nutritionists at Core Performance also revamped Sheraton’s food menus to include healthier options that are “Core Performance Endorsed.” Sure you can still splurge on chicken fingers and buffalo wings, but the more disciplined at least have the option of eating healthy with low-carb wraps and fresh salads. Gone are the days when you have to make a trip to Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s just to get something under 600 calories for dinner.
If you still can’t muster up the motivation to hit the gym, Sheraton gives you no excuses with the convenience of in-room training videos. There will be four 30-minute video-on-demand workouts free of cost at most properties. You can even call down to the dront desk and have a complimentary “gym in a bag” — including workout cards, workout mat, foam rolls, stretch rope, and massage stick — delivered to your room. I personally think that’s even lazier than someone who drives to the gym and loops around for the closest parking spot to the front door.
“The Core Performance methodology has been used to train many of the world’s top athletes and Sheraton is proud to partner with an organization that can bring this level of world-class fitness and health expertise to our guests in a customized manner,” said Brian Povinelli, VP Brand Management, Sheraton Hotels. “Fitness and travel go hand in hand and our guests have told us that working out is a priority when they travel. Our unprecedented partnership with Core Performance offers an array of programs and services to help guests enhance their overall fitness regimen and performance before, during and after their stay.”
Sheraton Fitness recently launched at select U.S. properties including the Sheraton Phoenix Downtown, Sheraton Seattle, Sheraton Fisherman’s Wharf and Sheraton St. Paul Woodbury and will continue its worldwide rollout in 2009.
